Well, it's that time of year again, the wholesale jewelry and gift shows for 2009 are underway! Is it just me or did 2008 go by exceptionally fast? It seems as though we just started preparing for the new season and now it's here. Our wholesale show preparations are finished, our new designs of handmade earrings and handcrafted bracelets are ready to go!

For Buyers the preparations are just beginning. Here are some tips to get the most out of your buying season:

1. Review your sales records for last year. This will give you a good idea of what sells and what hasn't sold well in your area. Sometimes this review will surprise you.

2. Eliminate slow sellers, discount them and sell through remaining stock to make room for new products.

3. Go through the buyers guides for the wholesale jewelry and gift shows that you will be attending. Mark your suppliers booths on the show map to ensure you place your orders with your existing suppliers. Personally I think that taking good photos is sometimes more difficult than making handmade jewelry! Everything has to be perfect to do justice to your handcrafted artisan jewelry. A picture is worth a thousand words if you're a writer; a picture is priceless if you are trying to market your jewelry and unique gifts online!

Handmade jewelry photography is too important to leave to chance. Waiting for the sun to be exactly right is okay if you don't have anything better to do but time is money and both are in short supply! You don't have to wait for the cloud to pass or the direct sun to be on the left. Actually most of our pictures have been taken in the wee hours of the morning, once you get everything right it's like you just can't stop! If you are serious about taking great pictures you need a studio set-up. It's not difficult and not too expensive considering the online marketing advantages.

We made our own light tent by making a cube and covering it with white rip-stop nylon fabric, cost about $20 to make. Let me know if you need instructions. We use three 5200'K spotlights (daylight) about $35 each. We use studio stands (kinda costly) but swing arm lamps work too, just less adjustable. We bought a professional digital camera with a great macro lens, it hooks up directly to the computer and you just press enter so no shaky out of focus shots. The photos come up on the monitor so you can adjust the coloring, etc. You just set up the first item getting it just right, then replace it with the next item so photo shoots go quickly. Touch ups are at a minimum if the photos are taken well. There will always be those really shiny pieces that when zoomed in at 5000 times the actual size you will see yourself taking the picture. Smudging tools work well in those cases!

Take your time to learn about your camera and all the features, it will make your life much easier. Experiment with background colors but we have found that nothing shows our handmade jewelry as well as a white background. Make sure your designs stand out emphasizing the unique features of each piece. It is all about experimenting and finding the perfect settings for each photograph.

No, we did not wake up today to tons of money being deposited into our bank accounts. Not yesterday, not today and probably not tomorrow! But that dream is still there and we continue to work on it hoping that someday all our hard work will pay off, big time!

Getting top ranking in the search engines is the goal to aim for. It can be frustrating to say the least. One day your climbing the ladder of success and the next day your site vanishes, no where to be found. You have to be patient and change what you can to get back on top. Top rank will drive the targeted traffic to your website, the rest will take care of itself.

Until then we’ll continue to do what we have always done, sell handmade jewelry and unique gift ideas. I guess what I’m trying to say is don’t quit your day job quite yet. When all is said and done, it seems the only thing left to do is put ads on your site and make a little money to pay a few bills. That really wasn’t the plan we had in mind. When I began to think of what to write I thought I should give some pointers that we learned the hard way. Some of the advice might seem simple but most mistakes are simple as well!

Outdoor craft shows and festivals are wonderful and fun to do, when the weather is nice that is. Unfortunately the weather doesn't always co-operate with the show schedule. Always remember the boy scout motto: BE PREPARED! These are just a few suggestions to keep everything going well:

1. Always have materials available to weigh down your canopy. We always had weights like paint cans filled with concrete, cinder blocks, empty jugs to fill with water for extra protection from the wind lifting your tent to OZ. Sometimes you will have to hang on as well! This is especially important if you are in Pittsburg's Three Rivers Art Festival; the canopy was being lifted right into the air! I still have the scars on my foot from the cinder blocks being lifted up. What goes up must come down!

2. Always carry hammer, nails, wire, small pieces of wood, string, rope and the like. We like to make sure all our display boards were securely hammered to the tables so they wouldn't tip over on a customers' head when the wind blew.

3. Make sure to have all extra stock in watertight containers. Especially for jewelry that is on cards. If the cards get wet or dirty it can really be a mess. You will appreciate this more when you are up to your knees in water, mud and sawdust!

4. Try if possible to put earrings on display boards or frames. This makes it much easier and quicker to pack up just in case of a storm or tornadoe. If a storm is forcast do not leave your display overnight. Broken canopies are not easy to fix and it's hard to get merchandise out of the trees!

Dr. Dollwet thought this might be the only way arthritics ever receive the copper their bodies need-copper that studies have shown can indeed relieve pain. Physicians remain somewhat skeptical about bracelets but don't entirely dismiss them, either. "I see people wearing copper bracelets, and they're wearing them because it helps them," says Elson Haas, M.D. "I think copper may have a role. It's possible that a copper deficiency does increase joint inflammation, and it doesn't seem that supplementing copper in the diet has the same effect as wearing it."Does that make Dr. Haas a believer? Although most people do not know the importance of copper intake in a daily diet, copper is one of the most essential nutrients needed in a body. HISTORIC USES OF COPPER COMPOUNDS IN MEDICINE

Copper has been used in medicine for thousands of years. The first Egyptian record of its use can be found in the Smith Papyrus, an ancient medical text written between 2600 and 2200 B.C. which records the use of copper to treat infected chest wounds and to sterilize drinking water. For wounds: "Thou shalt make for [the patient] applications for drying up the wound, powder of green pigment, other ingredients, and grease. Triturate and bind upon the wound" [Breasted 1930]. Trace amounts of organic-bound copper have helped some individuals [suffering from arthritis]. A popular source of such organic copper is superoxide dismutase (SOD). SOD is one of the body’s natural free-radical scavengers that reduce pain and inflammation. There is debate as to whether or not SOD itself is absorbed in sufficient quantity to be effective as the inflammation-lowering enzyme SOD – it is when injected – but in any event, the copper may be used to make more of your own SOD.Doctor Ed Harris of Texas A & M University has shown that low tissue stores of copper cause pain and joint stiffness similar to that of arthritis.In the 1970s, there was a fad of wearing copper bracelets to stop arthritic pain. Although many people experienced reduced pain, they were shamed out of wearing them because this was so unscientific and only folklore. The pain disappearance was explained as being due to the “come and go” nature of the disease.In one study of patients wearing copper bracelets, it was found that people absorbed an average of 13 milligrams of copper during a month. This could bring many people into the recommended daily intake range for copper (1.5 to 3.0 milligrams). Copper absorbed through the skin gets into the circulation very efficiently – more so than dietary copper. Incidentally, the people absorbing the copper noticed significant improvement in their arthritic conditions as well as a reduction of pain.Dr. Ray Walker of the University of Newcastle in New South Wales found that thirty-one of forty arthritis patients felt better wearing copper bracelets. Seventeen patients said there was less pain while they wore the bracelets, andfourteen others said they were unwilling to carry on for two months without the bracelets.Dr. Walker was a skeptic and wanted to disprove the suggested link. He had authentic-looking “imitation copper” bracelets made out of aluminum. One group wore copper bracelets and the other group wore lookalike bracelets. Although patients in both groups improved, many more in the copper bracelet group improved.Another skeptic, a columnist for a scientific journal, investigated the issue after a scientist reader reported beneficial effects of a copper bracelet on his wife. She had been wearing it but discontinued because it tarnished and turned her skin green. The scientist thought the fatty acids in the skin might be dissolving the oxide on the surface of the bracelet, producing fat-soluble copper “soaps” that could be absorbed through the skin.The columnist tried the bracelet himself and his arthritic pains were alleviated. The skin under his bracelet became green. He licked the stain and noted the metallic taste of copper salts. Water alone would not remove the stain. Hehad to use soap to get it off.
